Verso annotated in another hand: “Small chapel in Vienna Pötzleinsdorf, where O.G. lived for 14 years.” Oskar Gawell achieved significant art-historical recognition as a watercolorist by combining the expressive, nature-lyrical dynamism of “Die Brücke” Expressionism with a more restrained palette and a sensitive handling of light and pastel tonalities. This synthesis lends his vividly colored depictions of boats, coastal scenes, and houses a distinctive and highly individual character.
