The Neapolitan-born sculptor Amedeo Gennarelli emigrated to Paris in 1909, where he quickly established himself in the artists’ quarter of Montparnasse. With his debut at the prestigious Salon des Artistes Français in 1913, he initiated a decades-long and consistent exhibition presence at this important platform.
Among his celebrated Art Deco works shown there is the bronze sculpture Femme au pigeon (Woman with a Dove), created around 1925. The work depicts a gracefully seated nude female figure on a marble column, holding a carrier pigeon on her raised hand. The refined composition generates an elegant sense of movement, as the woman’s flowing hair forms a harmonious counterline to her outstretched arm.
Combining a naturalistic rendering of the body with an idealized facial expression, the sculpture is regarded in the art world as a poetic symbol of peace, freedom, and hope.
