Dedication: “Pour Marcel”
The present assemblage by Alexandre Diop brings together heterogeneous materials into a dense, multilayered pictorial structure. Fragments of paper, textiles, and found objects are combined in a precisely balanced composition oscillating between collage and relief. Diop deliberately employs layering and fragmentation to reveal narrative traces while simultaneously addressing their dissolution. In this work, the artist’s exploration of identity, materiality, and transformation becomes especially condensed. The assemblage thus evolves into a poetic construct reflecting both personal and collective history, translated into a contemporary visual language.
The French-Senegalese artist, whose family roots lie in Senegal, currently lives and works between Vienna, Paris, Dakar, and Berlin, with Vienna having become a central point of reference in his artistic practice over recent years. His works combine traditional materials and techniques with a contemporary visual vocabulary, granting everyday found objects a renewed symbolic presence. Diop’s works have been featured in numerous international exhibitions and are today held in important private and public collections.
Provenance: Personal gift from the artist, private collection, Vienna.
